When we were working on our allowances with the builder, we made sure to include a healthy budget for custom closets. With each bedroom having a walk in closet, two linen closets, and a large walk in pantry, there would be a lot to cover!
Throughout our research, we quickly realized that toe kicks on a closet system help to make it look completed. (Toe kicks are the trim at the bottom of the closet) Of course, there are a few downsides to them as well. Not only do toe kicks add to the cost of your closets but they can also limit your ability to store something directly on the floor under the bottom shelves. We decided to help save money and also for practicality, to not include toe kicks on the linen closets.
Another helpful tip we learned was to put a shelf between two hanging bars. This shelf serves as another place to store items such as shorts, jeans, etc. and also helps to divide the space.
As we were nearing the latter half of construction, we started going back and forth with the closet company and working on designs. For most of the bedrooms, we kept the closets simple, trying to maximize hanging space while including a row of shelves that could one day transition into drawers if desired.
In the master bedroom, we went ahead and had some drawers installed in hopes that we may no longer need a dresser in the bedroom. We also do a lot of ironing, especially touching up items in the morning before work, so we wanted to incorporate an ironing board into our closet that would be near an outlet. The company we used, Closet Monkey, was able to provide an ironing board can be pulled out of one of the drawers and unfolded. So while you may lose a drawer, it is really convenient and can easily be put away. We were also able to incorporate two valets so we can each set out clothes for the next day and tie/ belt racks. We were thrilled with how great the closet turned out and I can’t wait to move my stuff and get organized!
The past 4 days have been very hectic, we finally moved into our new house! We have been busy unpacking and trying to get settled since we will be hosting Thanksgiving only a week after the move. The builder is still busy working on the punch list but we feel very lucky to call this our home!
Tomorrow is the big day when the movers will arrive and we will be in our new house! The builder will still be working on a punch list of items but I couldn’t be more excited to be in the house. In honor of the move, here is a listing of moving items:
- Turn on utilities at new house
- Turn off utilities in old house
- Schedule cable provider for new house (especially important in our case since we are hosting thanksgiving next week)
- Turn off cable at old place
- Move your home owners insurance or cancel a renters insurance policy and get home owners insurance
- Forward your mail
- Update your address with work, insurance companies, credit card companies, doctors, etc
- Make an appointment for a new drivers license to update your address
- Schedule a security company for a quote and install
- Schedule any measurements for window treatments and install (key with a new build to give you some privacy)
We found it really helpful to designate a staging area in the apartment. Needless to say, it filled up quickly!
The big day is finally here! Final inspections are scheduled for Tuesday and the movers are scheduled for Thursday! We are in full time packing mode but I wanted to give you a quick glimpse of our front door that was recently painted this weekend. Can’t wait to show more photos once the chaos slows down!
I was amazed at what a difference a door handle can make. It can transition a door from modern to traditional very quickly. During the Parade of Homes and also on walks through model homes, we tried to pay attention to door handles and take pictures of ones we liked. Luckily, we always seemed to go back to the same style – an flat black/ bronze handle that is rectangular in shape.
After doing a little research, we found handles from two companies that fit our look. First was one from Baldwin, a part of their Reserve Collection. The second was from Schlage. Both give the same look but the Baldwin was priced slightly higher.
We decided the Baldwin looked sturdier than the Schlage and that the extra expense was worth the look. Now that these handles have been installed in the house, I absolutely love the way it looks and am glad we made that decision!
Another item I realized we needed before we move is new address numbers for the house. The old house had numbers but they were small, a bit rusty and wouldn’t go with the new look of the house. There are a few things to consider when selecting new address numbers – size, font, color, and location.
Location – First step is deciding where you are putting the numbers on your house. Some people put them above or to the side of garage doors. Other people put them on a front entry way if it is the closet point to the street. We are putting ours on the entry way closest to the street.
Sizes – Most address numbers come in two sizes, 4 inches or 6 inches. Depending on how far away from the street your house is may dictate what size you need in order for the numbers to be readable from the street. The front of our house where we are planning to put the numbers is roughly 35 to 40 feet from the street so we decided the 6 inch numbers would be best.
Color – House numbers come in almost any color imaginable. We decided on flat black so it will stand out against the Summer Gray (white) house color.
Fonts – House numbers now come in a variety of fonts and scripts. It’s important to pick something that will be easy to read from a distance. Since our house is more transitional, we wanted to stay away from any numbers that are too traditional.
After lots of searching, we stumbled upon address numbers at Rejuvenation. They have a variety of numbers to pick from. We selected this Modern 6 Inch Address Number in Flat Black and are so excited to see it on the house!
